Millennium Images presents: ‘Ice: a personal meditation’ by Hal Gage
“Art (the process) is a meditation on life. It is a self exploration and highly personal journey. Art (the product) is an artifact of that journey.”
Over the last 25 years that I have studied and practiced the art of photography, I have concentrated on trying to dig beneath the surface record that photography does so well. In choosing the landscape as my pallet I have worked through thoughts and philosophies to bring me to my working method. I have found that one learns little or nothing about a place, person or object after only one encounter. Alfred Stieglitz is attributed as saying that to make a portrait of someone one needed to photograph a subject from birth throughout life and on into their children’s life. Each project, each series I work on comes from extended exposure to my subject; over time, over years and decades. Once a critical mass of time, experience and compositions have been accumulated, the series takes shape and work on creating the tangible record begins.
Hal Gage has worked over the last 10 years photographing ice. Not to document the substance in all its guises, but as a personal meditative journey to see what ice has to offer spiritually, emotionally, and instructively.
And what has he learned from his communion with ice? To be in the midst of this exhibition is to “feel the power of ice, to feel the quiet wisdom and to feel the dynamism behind the seemingly still and stoic facades. As the conceptualist artist Andy Goldsworthy might say, now I \"know\" ice.”
‘Ice: a personal meditation’ is an exhibition of 45 black and white split-toned images photographed in Alaska by Hal Gage. It is on display at the Anchorage Museum from November 2004.
A tour is now being coordinated. For further information please contact Millennium Images.
