Sian Bonnell

Sian Bonnell was born in 1956 in London. Based in the UK, her work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally. The V&A, London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston are among the many public and private institutions that hold examples of her work. She combines her art practice with running TRACE, an artist-led project that curates exhibitions of new written, audio and visual work.

Bonnell places found and house hold articles out of context within the rural or coastal landscape and photographs these interventions using conventional or pinhole cameras. Working within the landscape tradition she undercuts the rhetoric of Romanticism to comment on and create other fictions: landscapes of the imagination, the sublime and the ridiculous. She lectures on photography in many universities in the South West and in London.

Her work has been shown regularly in London by Hirschl Contemporary Art and in Amsterdam by Hug Gallery for International Photography. Her recent exhibition curated by Ffotogallery, Cardiff – From an Elsewhere Unknown is currently touring and is accompanied by a substantial monograph with essays by Mark Haworth-Booth and Mel Gooding.

Bonnell’s highly individual work fuses the boundaries between still life, landscape and sculpture. In so doing, she creates playful yet provocative depictions that heighten our perception and pleasure of both our domestic and natural environments.
