We are excited to welcome you to our Michael Ormerod exhibition opens on to the public on Friday 27 of September and runs until Wednesday 9 of October at 33 Great Windmill Street, Soho, London W1.
Michael Ormerod (1947-1991) was a British photographer celebrated for his compelling portrayal of American landscapes and urban life. His career, though tragically cut short by a road accident on August 7, 1991, during his final field trip to the USA, left an indelible mark on the photography world. Ormerod’s work is characterized by its striking imagery and a raw, unfiltered look at the beauty and challenges of American life, earning him recognition for his poignant storytelling and unique perspective.
Following his untimely passing, Ormerod’s remarkable body of work has been preserved at Millennium Images in London. In 2012, a family gathering sparked a meaningful conversation between his daughter Ali and his close friend and fellow photographer, Geoff Weston. This exchange ignited a renewed commitment to explore Ormerod’s photographic legacy, leading to the discovery of a wealth of previously unseen negatives from his American journeys. Collaborating with photographer and lecturer Alan Thoburn over the past decade, they have meticulously revisited and curated this treasure trove of images, ready for public appreciation.
This upcoming exhibition marks Michael Ormerod’s first major showcase in over 1o years, featuring many never-before-seen photographs. It coincides with the release of a new book titled American Landscapes, published by RRB Photobooks, celebrating his profound impact on contemporary photography and honouring his enduring legacy.
