The new submission of work by Italian photographer Luigi Spina, incorporates three main projects; Mythical Diary, Amphitheatres, and The Buchner's Boxes. Stemming from an interest in classical art, archaeology, mythology, architecture and landscape, Spina employs an anthropological approach when representing these themes visually.
Mythical Diary is based on the relationship between people and religion of South Italy and how this influences the behaviour of migrants to new undiscovered lands. Amphitheatre plays on memory and aims to discover the barbaric lives of figures that were once immersed in battle but now rest as eroded stone. It is a testament to a dramatic search for a sense of beauty that unites the architectural heritage. Exploring the past through his lens, Spina investigates the archaeological finds of Phlegraean Fields as well as visiting the Pompeian Frescoes at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples to capture classical sculptures using large format film.
The Buchner's Boxes are a collection found by archaeologist Giorgio Buchner. The boxes contain teeth, bone fragments, skulls and items used by those who lived on the island over two thousand years ago. They resume their narrative today on display in their boxes.
Curator Marc Prust invited Spina to exhibit this project at the 2010 Festival FotoGrafia. The exhibition was however entitled 'unpublished unknown' and included a selection of work that had not yet been published. The same year he also exhibited his project Mythical Diary at the Museum MADRE in Naples.
This year, Spina is embarking on a new project called The Gaze of the Gorgon, which will take the form of a book published by Grenzi Claudio and which will be exhibited in five years time at the Campano Museum of Capua.
He has published many of his works as books and has received best photographic book prize at FotoPadova in 2001.
