Rod Morris will be launching his book “What you left behind”, and giving a talk about his work  at Electro Studios Project Space on Saturday 14th May 2022.

What you left behind

Is a selection of pictures from a much larger series, which Rod initially exhibited as part of a group exhibition in London, entitled Telling Tales. He keep returning to these photographs, and have become aware that, a photograph is defined not just by what we receive from it, but also what we give to it.

“Every photograph is a certificate of presence.” Roland Barthes, Camera Lucida” “…there are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer”. Ansel Adams

It can be a trigger, a jumping off point for our own thoughts and memories about the passage of time, our personal history, and our relationships to people, places and objects. For that reason, when we come across certain photographs, we keep returning to them in the hope that, like Proust’s Madeleine experience, some distant and related memory will spring from our subconscious, offering insights into who we are and what has shaped us.

Viewed through this prism, absence and presence can hardly be separated, as one fills the void of the other. In images without a human presence, we start to focus on other signifiers within the frame in order to navigate the story; we become the surrogate subjects, filling the absence with ourselves and our own narratives.

Date: Saturday 14th May 2022. The conversation is at 2pm the Private View starts at 4pm.

Address: Electro Studios Project Space, Seaside Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, TN38 0AL
