Description of work: Winnifred

She dreams of being one of the best weightlifters in sports.Getting to train daily is a challenge, but she also faces the traditional female gender stereotype” your body will be hard”.Winnifred spends her time at the gym and helps her mother at home. She has no day job. This is a typical life of young female athletes in Ghana. I used to be one.Winnifred won a bronze medal in the 49kg category in Uzbekistan in December 2021, qualifying her for the Birmingham 2022 commonwealth games. These were her words before the qualifications “My goal is to win a medal, any of them. it will qualify me for the main games”.This story is part of an ongoing project where I’m documenting Ghanaian female athletes fighting and overcoming barriers in sports.
